Post Our much anticipated bloodline mix calf has arrived -
- 8 days late, but he is now here.

Our much anticipated mix of bloodlines calf, Bailey arrived in the normal and expected way at 10.30am yesterday morning weighing in at 18.2kgs and as chocolatey a colour as we have ever had.

He absolutely glows brown in the sun. Extremely pretty.

While I didn’t get my red heifer as hoped, we did get a very strong black bullcalf who (after testing to confirm) will be a dun & red carrier, and non chondro carrier with a PHA Free by Inheritance status. It’s a 50/50 on A2/A2 &A2/A1.

He wasn’t quite out in the world when the eyes were blinking, the tongue was going in and out, and front legs were kicking along the ground (mum laid down the whole time to have him and obviously wasn’t getting him out as quickly as he wanted)

Savanah has broken the spell cast over her mother who has only had heifers and her breeding aged daughters producing only heifers to date.

Yes I know the males determine the sex – but………………………….!

Minus 4 here this morning so just as well as mum with her extremely gentle nature let us carry bub with her walking close by up to the shelter which we made warm as toast with straw, insulation and a large yard where they can stay for the next couple of days in peace and quiet while they bond.

We checked on them both around 5am and they were sound asleep and warm. Poor little man to have to experience that drop in temp for his first night in the world…………

Yes it was fortunate that she waited not only when we were back home, but also a mid morning delivery – so good of her.
:D

We haven’t yet had a middle of the night delivery………you know now that I said that, the next couple will be 2am ers !!!!!! And if so, may your ears burn red hot each time

Bailey was so cute yesterday, bouncing around and inbetween our legs. It is so fantastic having a mum who is so laid back with us and is passing this onto her son - he appears to have no "calf-protective instinct" at all.

He even moos when the others in the herd are around and touches their noses - just too cute for a postcard really.

We are really going to enjoy this little man growing up, thats for sure
