Post Grass Tetany - as cattle owners are you aware?
I was surprised and quite shocked when at the produce place on the weekend when I over heard a very elderly gentleman talking about his cows and how 4 are sick.

The symptoms he was describing had me believe they had tetany. Thank goodness I didn’t have to say anything as the produce store owner immediately told him what the problem was and pointed him to the Grass Tetany Blocks.

Unbelievably this guy balked at the idea of having to spend $25 on a block, instead choosing to say he will get the vet out.

Couldn’t help myself, I stepped in and explained why he should already have had the blocks situated in each paddock and if he didn’t act quickly he was going to lose the 4 of the cows, if not more.
He claimed in thirty odd years of having cattle he never wasted his money on such things (pointing to the blocks). So I asked him how many of his cattle would he find dead in the paddock each year?

Then the light turned on……………………he bought 8 blocks, one for each paddock.

So if you haven’t placed a Grass Tetany block in your cattles' reach or you havent heard of it before, here is a link to the DPI’s PDF on the matter

http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0013/111334/Grass-tetany-in-cattle.pdf

AND PLEASE go and buy a Grass Tetany block or two today – don’t delay. The blocks are around $25 each. They are large and last for months.
(They are additional to the mineral/salt blocks)

It’s a small investment for a huge return.

The link works fine now - sorry for that

Yes I am going to have to make a note of the blocks we have.
I know there are three others which were recommended by cattle owners and/or produce owner/s.

Grass Tetany was the only one I ever knew about so it was the first to arrive.
Oh and I know to stay away from Urea, since our dexters are fat enough.....................

Is there a special 'tray' or 'feeder' for these blocks?

We have ours on the white plastic lids from 20 litres plastic containers and besides it looking terrible, the rain sits in the bottom of the lid, softening the bottom of the blocks until we drain the water out.
And some have just landed on the ground from moo's rough tongues.
