Post Alpaca autopsy
I went out this morning and one of my wethers had died (still warm, so hadn't been long). :(

No signs of struggle or that he'd been there long. No injury, pink gums etc.. Vaccinated, drenched and ADE...

Called the vet out for an autopsy as I wanted to know what was going on.

The vet found he had a lot of fluid in his chest (heaps), his heart seemed enlarged and one side was hard, the walls of the valves were really thick and the other side of the heart had no muscle tone and was all floppy. Heart and fluid taken back for further study. A little bit of a 'pattern' on one side of the liver, but no signs of parasites. Some liver taken back for study, along with a faecal sample.

Everything else looked perfectly normal. Although the vet did comment a number of times on how 'well conditioned' he was - having been in a paddock with no supplementary feed, he was fat and had good muscle tone. Stomach full of grass, he certainly had kept his appetite.

Vet will call back with findings, but doesn't think it's something I need to worry about with the other alpacas, instead thinks he had a heart condition and maybe had a heart attack this morning. Poor boy, he was only three!

The autopsy was very interesting, wished I had my camera to record things (and hoping I don't need to see another alpaca from the inside!).

Congestive heart failure confirmed, and the 'nutmeg liver' or congestive hepatopathy is another symptom (engorged blood vessels caused by the pressure from the heart).

Good to know, and that it would have been quick.

Sorry to hear you've lost one of your boys cwackers. It must have been a rather big shock to find him lying there.
At least you have some positive news from the autopsy and all your other alpaca's are safe.
